Mercy's Sample Birth Plan

What's a birth plan?

According to the American Pregnancy Association, a birth plan is a simple, clear, one-page statement reflecting your wants and needs for the birth of your child. Providing a copy of the plan to everyone directly involved in the birth will help them better understand what you would like to happen.

During childbirth, it’s possible you may feel like you’re losing control. Your birth plan can make your labor and delivery preferences clear, allowing you to feel confident and a part of the decision-making process, as much as possible.

There are several things to consider when documenting your birth plan, including, but not limited to:

  • Your labor support team
  • Pain management
  • Fetal monitoring

The following birth plan can help guide discussions with your Mercy health care provider as you face choices throughout your pregnancy, labor and delivery. As with anything, you should remain somewhat flexible with your wishes as things don’t always go according to plan. The most important thing to keep in mind is the safe birth of your little miracle.
